Automatic tire inflation saves fleets money on tires and fuel, and improves safety, experts maintain during annual seminar, plant tour in San Antonio

The fleet maintenance manager for Hickory, North Carolina-based wholesale grocery distributor Merchants Distributors (MDI) has relied on the Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS) from Pressure Systems International (P.S.I.) to keep his company’s fleet of 815 refrigerated and dry van trailers moving product since 2016.

“Our drivers were experiencing a lot of flats on the side of the road, so we needed a system that could keep tires inflated because we didn’t have enough people to go out and check every tire on every trailer,” he explained.

According to a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) study, the use of tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) or automatic tire inflation systems (ATIS) can improve fuel economy by approximately 1.4%.

Fuel savings is not the only benefit here. Arguably, the number two operator or fleet cost behind fuel is tires; therefore maintaining tires properly can offer savings two-fold.

Let’s consider the benefits of proper inflation. Underinflation is always the leading cause of tires not reaching their full potential in terms of life and fuel economy. Along with the fuel savings, by always maintaining proper cold tire pressure, operators and fleets can extend tire life by 10%. This is especially important in the case of those who use retreads.

Solving tire inflation problems would save the trucking industry millions. Underinflated tires are the single biggest reason for on-road breakdowns. Underinflation causes rapid degradation in tire life expectancy, and it can create a very dangerous sidewall failure called a zipper rupture. And underinflation makes no distinction between virgin tires and retreads. Under-inflated tires are time bombs. Period.
